I used to believe that studying abroad was the only serious path for an ambitious student, and I argued it loudly. What changed my mind was a colleague who had turned down a scholarship in Canada to build a company at home. Watching her hire eleven people in three years, in a market she understood better than any newcomer could, made me realise I had confused leaving with progressing. Two arguments moved me: the opportunity she would have missed, and the fact that her advantage was local knowledge, which does not travel. I still think studying abroad suits many people. I no longer think it is the measure of ambition, and I am careful now about advising anyone to go.
