Describe a teacher you still remember. What were they like, and what made them different from your other teachers?

The teacher I still remember is Mrs Adeleke, who taught me chemistry when I was fifteen. She was not the warmest teacher in that school and she never gave an easy mark. What made her different was that she answered questions properly. When I asked why a reaction went one way and not the other, she did not tell me to learn the rule, she drew the energy diagram on the back of my exercise book and stayed twenty minutes after the bell to finish it. I failed her first test badly. Under the score she wrote a single line: this is a starting position, not a verdict. I have used that sentence on myself in every difficult year since, which is more than most lessons manage.
