Longer lives are one of the modern world's quietest achievements, and longer careers have followed them. This trend carries real benefits and real costs for individuals and for society, and honest policy has to hold both at once. For individuals, the advantages are substantial. More working years mean more time to save for retirement, and for many people purpose, structure and colleagues are exactly what makes later life healthy; doctors consistently observe that engaged seventy-year-olds decline more slowly than idle ones. Society gains too, because experienced workers carry judgement that cannot be downloaded, and their taxes steady pension systems strained by rising life expectancy. The disadvantages mirror the advantages. Not all work ages kindly: a bricklayer's or nurse's body cannot negotiate with a retirement age set by economists, so uniform rules punish manual workers hardest. Individuals who work into their seventies may also spend their healthiest remaining years at a desk they no longer love. For society, older employees remaining in senior posts can slow promotion for the young, feeding frustration in generations already squeezed by housing costs, and companies that skew old may innovate more cautiously. In summary, longer working lives enrich individuals who choose them and economies that accommodate them, but they burden those trapped in physical jobs and can clog opportunity for the young. The sensible response is flexibility: retirement ages that reflect the demands of the job, and workplaces designed so experience and youth advance together rather than in each other's way.
