Band 8.5 model answer: Describe a small business or local shop that you admire
A band 8.5 sample answer to this IELTS Speaking Part 2 cue card, with the structure examiners reward. You get 1 minute to prepare and up to 2 minutes to speak.
The cue card
Your 2-minute structure
- Open with a direct answer (10 seconds). Name your choice immediately: one sentence that answers "describe a small business or local shop that you admire". Do not waste your first 20 seconds on "that's an interesting question".
- What the shop or business sells (about 25 seconds). Give the fact, then add one detail and one feeling. A specific memory always beats a general statement.
- How you discovered it (about 25 seconds). This is where a past-tense story earns grammar marks. Set the scene in one sentence, then say what happened.
- What makes it different from bigger shops (about 25 seconds). Slow down and be concrete: a name, a place, a number. Details are what make an answer sound fluent rather than memorised.
- And explain why you admire it (about 25 seconds). Link back to your opening sentence with a connector like 'which is exactly why' so the whole answer feels planned.
- Close with why it matters (15 seconds). End on how it affected you or what it taught you. A natural closing line signals confidence to the examiner.
Band 8.5 sample answer
224 words, spoken at a natural pace this takes about 1 minute 43 seconds. Notice how specific the details are; that specificity is what you should copy, not the story itself.
Why this answer earns band 8.5
- "tucked between a phone repair place and a noodle shop" gives concrete spatial detail that shows natural Fluency and Coherence in building a scene.
- "which sounds like a downside but it means" shows a hedging cohesive device that manages a contrast smoothly.
- "riding on every loaf" is an idiomatic collocation demonstrating range in Lexical Resource.
- The conditional-style clause "if a batch turns out badly" shows accurate subordination for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
- Stress falls naturally on "stubborn" and "consistency", showing controlled word-level Pronunciation for emphasis.
How the two minutes are spent
- Introduce the bakery and what it sells (~34 words)
- Explain the chance discovery one evening (~40 words)
- Contrast its small-batch, personal approach with bigger shops (~61 words)
- Explain the admiration for the owner's consistency and risk (~89 words)
Phrases worth learning
| which sounds like a downside but it means | introduce a reframed positive after mentioning an apparent negative |
| there's something a bit stubborn about | praise persistence or resistance to change in any topic |
| no brand cushioning him if | explain personal accountability in contrast to institutional safety nets |
| on a whim | describe an unplanned decision in a personal story |
| kept doing the one thing well | summarise a strategy of focus versus expansion |
This answer includes invented specific detail written to show how detail is used, not to be quoted as fact: the bakery named Hoà ng's. IELTS does not check facts, so this is about the texture, never the claim.
What the examiner listens for
Fluency (can you keep going for 2 minutes without long pauses), vocabulary range (topic words, not just "good" and "nice"), and grammar variety (past tenses and linking words like "which is why" and "even though"). Hesitation is normal; stopping is what costs bands. If you lose your thread, say "what I mean is..." and keep moving.
