When work left the office, millions of workers left the city, and the effects now run in two directions at once. For the big cities, the departure is a mixed loss. Emptier trains and cheaper rents sound like relief, and for remaining residents they partly are. But city economies are ecosystems: the departed programmer also fed a lunch counter, a dry cleaner and a tax base, and central districts built entirely around office workers have hollowed out, taking low-wage service jobs with them. The people hurt most by remote work are often those who never had the option of it. For the receiving towns, the arrivals bring money and problems in the same suitcase. New residents spend city salaries in local shops, reopen schools that were shrinking, and sometimes bring whole companies behind them. Yet those same salaries collide with village housing markets, and locals can find themselves outbid for homes in the town where they were born, a resentment already visible from Lisbon to Bali. The sensible response is management rather than celebration or panic. Cities can convert surplus offices to housing, and towns can tax second homes while building for locals first. In conclusion, remote migration redistributes prosperity but does not multiply it automatically; whether either side wins depends on how deliberately the movement is governed. Geography has become a choice, and choices need rules.
